Before any other assessment begins, an operator must pass a licensing check. If it fails, the review stops there and the operator is not featured. If it passes, we assess it across five areas: licensing and regulation, responsible gambling, player experience, terms and conditions, and customer support. A final score out of ten is assigned based on our findings across all five areas, weighted toward the factors that most directly affect player safety and fairness.

Our Rating Methodology

Every score that we publish is the result of a structured review process built around licensing integrity, player protection, and real account testing. This page explains how that process works, what we look for, and how scores are determined.

We do not accept payment to feature or rate operators. Scores are not negotiable and are not influenced by affiliate relationships.

Stage 1: Licensing Verification

This is a gateway check, not a scored category.

We confirm that the operator holds a current, valid licence by checking official public registers directly. For UK-facing operators this means the UK Gambling Commission’s public register at gamblingcommission.gov.uk. For European operators we check the Malta Gaming Authority licensee database at mga.org.mt, along with other relevant regulatory registers depending on jurisdiction.

We check:

  • That the licence exists and is active, not expired or suspended
  • That the licence covers the products and markets the operator is offering
  • That the named licence holder matches the entity operating the site

An operator without a valid licence from a recognised regulator is not reviewed, rated, or recommended on our site. This applies regardless of reputation, size, or commercial relationship.

Stage 2: Responsible Gambling

Responsible gambling tools are the single most heavily weighted factor in our scoring. An operator can offer excellent games, fast withdrawals, and competitive bonuses, and still receive a low overall score if its player protection standards fall short.

We test these tools directly during account testing, not by reading the operator’s own documentation.

What we assess:

Deposit and spending limits

We verify that limits are available, that they function correctly, and that reductions are applied immediately rather than after a delay. We check that the limit-setting process is presented clearly at registration, in line with current UKGC requirements.

GAMSTOP participation

For UK-licensed operators, we confirm participation in the national self-exclusion scheme. We also check that self-exclusion tools within the operator’s own platform work as described.

Reality checks and session controls

We verify that on-screen time and spend notifications are available and configurable by the player.

Harm indicator monitoring

We assess whether the operator demonstrates visible customer interaction practices, including responsible gambling prompts triggered by account activity rather than only on request.

Signposting

We check that links to GamCare, BeGambleAware, and GAMSTOP are clearly displayed, not limited to a buried footer link.

Operators with significant gaps in responsible gambling provision receive a low score in this category that materially affects their overall rating.

Stage 3: Player Experience

We open a real account and use it. This stage involves depositing and withdrawing our own funds and evaluating the experience as a player would.

Here is what we assess:

Account registration and KYC

We evaluate how straightforward the registration process is, how identity verification is handled, and whether documentation requests are proportionate and timely.

Deposit and withdrawal processing

We test at least one deposit and one withdrawal per review and record the time taken. We pay particular attention to whether withdrawal requests are processed without unexplained delays or friction, as this is one of the most common points of failure we identify between operators that meet regulatory requirements on paper and those that deliver in practice.

Game Fairness and Software Providers

We note the software providers in use and whether games are certified by recognised testing laboratories. We do not accept operator claims about RTP or fairness without third-party certification.

Bonus Terms in Practice

Where bonuses are accepted during testing, we assess whether the terms function as described and whether wagering requirements are clearly communicated before the bonus is activated.

Stage 4: Terms and Conditions

We read the full terms and conditions, bonus terms, and privacy policy for every operator we review. We assess these against UK consumer law, including the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and against UKGC requirements for fair and transparent terms under LCCP Licence Condition 7.1.1.

What we flag:

  • Withdrawal limits or conditions that are not clearly disclosed before deposit
  • Bonus terms with wagering requirements that are disproportionate or inconsistently applied
  • Account closure or fund confiscation provisions that are vague or one-sided
  • Terms that vary materially between the promotional copy and the full legal document

Operators with misleading or one-sided terms are clearly flagged in the review and penalised in scoring. Where terms create a material risk to player funds, this is noted explicitly in the review summary.

Stage 5: Customer Support

We contact customer support directly during every review, using more than one channel where available.

What we assess:

  • Response time across live chat, email, and where applicable, telephone
  • Whether responses are substantive and accurate, or generic and templated
  • Whether support staff can correctly explain the operator’s own responsible gambling tools and withdrawal processes
  • Whether support is genuinely 24/7 or limited in practice

Poor customer support does not disqualify an operator, but it does affect the overall score and is noted clearly in the review.

How Scores Are Assigned

Scores are expressed as a single figure out of ten and represent our overall assessment of the operator across all five areas above. Responsible gambling and licensing compliance carry the most weight. Player experience, terms, and support contribute to the final figure based on the severity of any issues identified.

A score of 8.0 or above indicates an operator we consider well-regulated, fair, and suitable for most players. Scores between 6.0 and 7.9 indicate operators with notable strengths but identifiable weaknesses that players should be aware of. Scores below 6.0 indicate significant concerns. Operators below a minimum threshold are not recommended and may not be featured at all.

Scores are not permanent. We update ratings when regulatory changes occur, when player complaints indicate a pattern of issues, or when we conduct a scheduled re-review. The date of the most recent review is published on every operator page.

What We Do Not Do

We do not accept payment to improve a score or ranking. We do not feature operators that fail our licensing check. We do not take operator-supplied information at face value where it can be independently verified. We do not publish a review without completing real account testing.

The existence of a commercial relationship has no bearing on the score assigned.

Re-Reviews and Score Changes

Gambling is a heavily regulated sector and operator standards change. Licences are suspended. Withdrawal processing deteriorates. Terms are updated. We monitor UKGC enforcement publications, MGA sanctions notices, and player feedback on an ongoing basis.

When we identify a material change, we update the relevant review and adjust the score where appropriate. Where an operator has been downgraded or removed following a change in status, this is noted on the operator’s page.
